Stop-and-go is the brakes’ least favorite thing, and the school commute is nothing but stop-and-go. If you’ve been hearing a squeal, feeling a shimmy in the pedal, or noticing the car takes a beat longer to stop than it used to, get it looked at now. Brakes rarely get better on their own, and they pick the worst times to get worse.
Battery Trouble Often Shows Up in Early Fall
Heat is rough on a battery, and a lot of summer-weakened batteries don’t show their hand until the first cool morning when they’re asked to turn over and just don’t. If yours is a few years old, better to know now than to find out in the school parking lot. Fluids and belts earn a look while we’re at it, since those are the things that leave you stranded when you least expect it.
Don’t Forget the Wipers
Summer sun cracks and hardens wiper blades, and you usually don’t notice until the first hard rain hits during the morning commute. If yours streak, chatter, or leave spots behind, replacing them now is cheap insurance against a windshield you can’t see through on the way to school.
