What the VIN Actually Tells You

1–3: World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI)

4–8: Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)
These digits describe the model, body style, engine type, transmission, and safety features.
- A Ford F-150 with a V8 engine and four-wheel drive will have a different sequence here than a base model Fusion.
9: Check Digit
This one is mostly for security. It’s a mathematical formula to verify that the VIN is legit and hasn’t been faked.
10: Model Year
This digit tells you the model year of the vehicle.
- Letters and numbers rotate on a 30-year cycle. For example, A = 1980 or 2010, B = 1981 or 2011, and so on.
- Letters like I, O, Q, U, and Z are not used to avoid confusion with similar-looking numbers.
11: Assembly Plant
This shows which specific factory your car came from. Helpful when certain plants have different quality ratings or recall histories.
12–17: Production Sequence Number
The last six digits are unique to your car and show its production order. Think of it as your vehicle’s serial number.
