Besides being environmentally friendly, one of the big selling points about an EV or Hybrid vehicle is that the maintenance costs are substantially less and are not needed as frequently.
This is because an EV eliminates over 24 or so mechanical components that a conventional car uses. EVs do not need oil changes, cooling system flushes, spark plugs, drive belts, etc.
Hybrids need no special maintenance, other than some models have an air filter on the battery compartment that needs changing every 40,000 miles or so, but in many other ways, a Hybrid is not much different, speaking of maintenance, than a regular gas engine vehicle.
This doesn’t mean that Hybrids or EVs are maintenance-free. I found it interesting that nearly all EV and Hybrid owners think that they must return the car to the dealer for service.
Is this true? Do regular repair shops have the knowledge to service your Hybrid or EV?
No Dealer Required
The short and sweet answer here is that you do NOT need to have the dealer service your EV or Hybrid.
In fact, even if you have a new, regular gas-powered vehicle, you do NOT need to return to the dealer for service or maintenance.
Your new car warranty will not be affected in any way.
Do Regular Mechanic Shops Know What to Do?
Oh yes, they absolutely do.
Most servicing of your EV is actually things mechanics do every day, such as rotating tires, inspecting electrical connections, checking the coolant level in the battery, inspecting the vehicle for leaks, excessive wear, or damage, lubricate body components (such as door hinges) inspecting the suspension, replacing cabin filters and wiper blades as needed.
Avoid Future Problems
I would recommend using a mechanic that is ASE-Certified in repairing/servicing EVs and Hybrid vehicles.
While most of the maintenance needs of your vehicle are not overly complicated, I wouldn’t trust my EV or Hybrid to an untrained, backyard mechanic.
