Job Description

Service Assistant

The "Right Hand" of the Shop

Service Assistant | DeKalb, IL

Bockman’s has been a fixture in DeKalb County since 1964. We have two locations, 24 employees, and a reputation that took 62 years to build. We are a NAPA Auto Care shop, voted Best Auto Repair in the Daily Chronicle Readers’ Choice 15 times, and named NAPA Shop of the Year out of more than 18,000 centers nationwide.

We run a busy, professional shop. Most days move fast, and we like it that way. Right now we are looking for a Service Assistant at our DeKalb location who can keep up, take initiative, and treat every customer the way they deserve to be treated.

If you have worked in a customer-facing role, have strong communication skills, and want to be part of a team that takes real pride in its work, keep reading.

The Service Assistant is the connective tissue between the front desk and the shop floor. You keep things moving, customers taken care of, and the day on track. You will be trained on every part of the role.

  • First impression. Greet customers when they arrive and make sure they feel welcome and informed from the moment they walk in.
  • Estimating. Learn to write and present repair estimates clearly and honestly. You will be trained on our process. The goal is for customers to understand exactly what they need and why, not to feel sold to.
  • Communication. Keep the flow moving between service advisors and technicians. When something changes, customers hear it from us before they have to ask.
  • Shop support. Help with digital vehicle inspections, parts tracking, scheduling, and front-of-house operations.
  • Phones. Handle incoming calls with professionalism. Answer what you can. Get answers for what you cannot.
  • Reliability when it counts. When the manager is out, you are the steady presence that keeps the day running smoothly. You will have support, but the team will look to you.

Who We Are Looking For

  • Experience.  At least one year of customer service, sales, or front-facing work. Experience in automotive is a plus but not required. We will teach the industry. We cannot teach work ethic or communication skills.
  • Communication.  You speak clearly, listen well, and can hold a professional conversation with anyone from a first-time customer to a fleet manager.
  • Judgment.  When Greg is out, the shop still has to run. We are not looking for someone who needs to be told what to do every step of the way.
  • Reliability.  You show up on time, follow through, and take ownership of your part of the day.
  • Composure.  Busy lobbies, tight schedules, and last-minute changes are part of the job. You handle pressure without taking it out on the customer or the team.
  • Driver’s license.  Valid license required. You will be moving vehicles.
